Meet Angie Whitaker, CAE, Executive Director of the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA).

NASCLA is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1962 and is dedicated to promoting best practices and license uniformity for agencies that regulate the construction industry.  The association’s membership is comprised of Executive Directors, Board of Directors and Staff from State Agencies that regulate the business of contracting along with national trade associations and those involved in the construction industry.  The association currently has a national membership base of 41 contractor licensing agencies in 27 states, 2 territories, 1 foreign country and over 150 associate, affiliate and business members. NASCLA offers its members the opportunity to network with other state regulators through an array of annual programs and events. 

NASCLA’s Annual Conference is the association’s premier event. The conference audience is comprised of regulators, construction industry representatives and decision-makers from more than 40 state licensing agencies, testing companies and associations across the United States.  This conference is an opportunity to network with others in your profession along with providing a forum for participants to collaborate, exchange ideas and information on licensing and construction issues and industry trends.

NASCLA also publishes the NASCLA Contractors Guides to Business, Law and Project Management publications for over 30 state agencies for candidates that are studying for their contractor’s license along with other consumer awareness brochures.  In addition, NASCLA offers the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors which is accepted by 17 out of 21 state agencies around the country who offer this classification, promoting contractor mobility and portability.  This summer, the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program will be administered for participating state agencies for Electrical Contractors, Journeyman Electricians, and Residential Electrical Contractors. 

AzSAE provides Angie with a platform to network with her other association colleagues and share valuable knowledge, tools and resources.  Many years ago, when Angie joined AzSAE, it helped her to advance her career goals and to learn more from others in the same profession.  AzSAE also provided her with a local CAE Study Group that supported her in preparing for the ASAE CAE Examination.  Angie and her staff enjoy attending the educational trainings and events annually, so they know that they are not alone and are able to learn from their peers.   

Angie graduated from Arizona State University with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communications in December 1999. Angie received her Master Certificate in Business Management from Tulane University Freeman School of Business and has received her Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification through the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).  She most recently received her Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Arizona State University (ASU) Lodestar.

Fun Facts:
- Has a wonderful Husband, 2 Boys that are 4 and 7 who all love baseball
- Has an English Mastiff puppy that is 10 months old
- Became an Executive Director at the age of 29
- Loves working out at Orange Theory Fitness

CAE: 2019 and Beyond

As we enter 2019, we find the CAE continues to serve as our industry’s seminal credential. As of the end of 2018 there were over 4,300 Certified Association Executives. If you have kept an eye on ASAE’s job board over the past few years, you probably have noticed the trend of more employers seek candidates that have their CAE. 
Even as we all observe in our own organizations, we know that an industry’s certification should continually evolve and improve to better serve those who hold the credential as well as the organizations that employ them. With that focus, it is my pleasure to share some CAE updates for 2019 as well as those on the horizon:
1. C-suite Experience Requirement Shift: Starting with applications for the May 2019 exam, those who are employed as a Chief Staff Executive or a C-suite level executive as a qualifying organization must now be an employee for just a minimum of ONE year. All other prerequisites remain the same.

Sponsorship Marketing: The Critical Association Roles for Success

Third of a three-part series, based on the book, “Secrets and Techniques of Sponsorship Marketing: What every association, conference, convention, and seminar needs to know to effectively sell and grow their sponsorships.”

Few things appear to be as entrenched in the association mindset as the widespread commitment to the Platinum-Gold-Silver-Bronze (PGSB) tier structure of sponsorship offerings. While varying across associations, the PGSB structure almost always involves precious metals or gem stones denoting a hierarchy among sponsors (with a related hierarchy of prices). Many associations have embraced PGSB with almost religious-like zeal. In fact, we have seen many signs of extreme resistance to change where PGSB is concerned. However, we strongly recommend that all associations review their use and commitment to the PGSB structure and truly ask if PGSB is helping or hurting their sponsorship marketing?

No one knows who invented PGSB or where it came from, but the ease of copying the structure and modifying it for a new association’s prices and offerings make it a simple and compelling entry-level structure in sponsorship marketing. Its widespread use seems to validate it as a useful tool. It is not difficult to understand and relatively easy to implement. PGSB has become a de facto standard in the association industry.

What is wrong with that? Simple, understandable, easy to implement, and inexpensive are all good things. Our research shows that PGSB is undermining associations and sending the wrong messages to both sponsors and members/attendees. This is a serious problem and is hindering sponsorship sales for most associations. Where associations perceive PGSB to be successful, we found associations severely underpricing their sponsorships and leaving significant money on the table. Those are not good things for associations.
